Letter from the Kansas Commissioner of Education

Dear Educators -

How do you thank all educators in the state of Kansas who have put students first and have produced-for the last nine years-more and more students who have met or exceeded high challenging standards in both reading and math? Mere words do not seem sufficient, yet they can be so powerful.

Thank you, Kansas educators, you are the best!

Results released in October from the 2008 Kansas Statewide Assessments show continued strong performance results in reading, mathematics, science and history/government for all students. With over 99 percent participation by all students in each of these content areas, student performance is continuing an upward trend.

Across all of Kansas, the percent of students reading at the proficient level or above has risen from 59% in 2000 to 84% in 2008. This is a 25% gain. Math has risen from 50% to 81%, a 31% gain. The gains have been just as strong in history/government and science. Additionally, the achievement gaps among various groups of Kansas students in reading, mathematics, history/ government and science are closing. Participation rates on all assessments in Kansas are above ninety-nine percent for all students. This indicates that you take the assessments seriously, you make sure that all students are counted, and you have been working tirelessly to ensure that all children achieve to high levels.

The following charts and subsequent statistics highlight the incredible gains you and your students have achieved.

Charts Reading & Mathematics progression 2000-2008

When compared with the results over the past nine years, reading, mathematics, history/ government and science scores all reflect a continuing upward trend. I have used the word phenomenal when describing the achievement of our students across all grade levels in Kansas. These truly phenomenal results are attributable to your sustained focus on challenging each student to do his/her best everyday and your relentless and effective teaching of each and every student. You have met and exceeded increasingly higher targets under the No Child Left Behind legislation and your students are the beneficiaries.

Congratulations on a job well done! The future of the world is in your classroom, a future with the potential to improve tomorrow. What a responsibility you fulfill each and every day and how well you do it!

There has never been a more important time to focus on the students of tomorrow, than today.

Kansas Commissioner of Education

Jerry Jones Honored as the State School Psychologist of the Year

Jones receives the Kansas Association of School Psychologists School Psychologist of the Year Award on October 17, 2008. Dr. James Persinger of Emporia State University presented Jerry the award in his role as KASP President at a luncheon in Junction City.

Described by his colleagues as one of the most incredible people in regards to his professionalism and compassion, Jerry is a humble person who leads by example. He's representative of many unsung educators in Kansas: a faithful, compassionate professional who comes to work every day, doing the best he can for the teachers and students in his buildings.

A colleague of Jerry's had this to say about Jerry, "To say that Jerry has had an influence on my life, both on a personal basis and on a professional one, would be the understatement of a lifetime." He goes on to describe Jerry as "always being able to show a caring attitude, while giving difficult advice that he has carefully thought through. This is done in a deliberate manner, with a calm demeanor; The calm is absorbed by those around him. His quiet influence on others is astounding."

A graduate of Fort Hays State University, Jerry worked at Tri-County for several years, primarily responsible for Fort Larned and Lewis schools.  Since 1982, he's served at the North Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative.  His primary responsibilities in recent years have been in the Stockton and Palco schools.

Separately, Jerry was honored at the 2008 KASP convention for having served Kansas as a school psychologist for 30 years.  Thank you for your dedication and service, Jerry!
